During the first week of school we discuss the "rights" that all students have. Then we discuss the "Responsibilities" that come along with these rights. Once the rights and responsibilities have been agreed upon by the whole class, a poster of our "Classroom Bill of Rights" is created and signed by all of the students in our class. This process gives all students in the class a voice in establishing classroom expectations and that creates a feeling of ownership for the students.
We all agree to follow West View's Behavior Pledge:
•I will show respect for others and their possessions.
•I will keep my hands feet and other objects to myself.
•I will use acceptable language.
•I will follow directions.
•I will not prevent the teacher from teaching or other students from learning.
Consequences
Students begin each week with 10 mini-popsicle sticks. Each time they disobey part of the West View Behavior Pledge, they must give me one of the sticks & complete a
Behavior Reflection page at the end of my blog. The good news is that students can also earn extra sticks with good behavior!
At the end of the week they earn money (through our mini-economy) for the number of sticks they still have.
Behavior Bingo:Whole Class Compliment Reward System
Students earn chances at Bingo for compliments & positive behaviors. Each compliment is worth 1-5 chances depending on the situation. I choose children to pick a number out of a bag and they place it on a hundreds chart in the correct spot.
Once a bingo is reached (10 in a row) they earn a class reward. When the entire chart is filled they earn some type of class party (their choice).
Team Management System
In my class I believe in having students work together as a team in certain situations. Teams also have a chance to work together to earn a reward. Teams are rewarded by working together. following directions, and showing exemplary behavior. All teams begin their day with 10 unifix cubes on the team captains desk. Teams who are not showing exemplary behavior have to remove a cube and place it in the cube basket. The good news is that if teams lose a cube, they can work really hard to earn it back! Teams who keep all 10 cubes receive a point at the end of the day. Rewards are given when the following points are earned:
10 points= a choice of a new pencil, sheet of stickers or an eraser
20 points= sit anywhere in the room to do your work for one day
30 points = popcorn treat during read aloud
40 points= Pick a small toy from the Treasure Chest
